Males in Calisthenics

Currently of course Calisthenics consists entirely of girls. To me this is not suprising, when you look at what Calisthenics has now become. Somethime in 1999 however, the Equal Opportunities Commission in Victoria ruled that it is discrimination not to allow males to compete in the sport, when allegedly one boy from Victoria attempted to join a club and was refused. At the beginning of 2000, a national rule was passed that all males under the age of 12 be allowed into the sport, as up to this age, boys and girls were judged to be equal competitively. Over this age, it is up to the discresion of the club invovled. As I write this (2000) there are a dozen or more boys who have now joined Calisthenics.

Therefore I definately see a future for males in Calisthenics, however personally I think that until some aspects of the sport are modified or changed to accomodate guys, you won't get alot them flocking to the sport. Perhaps some new sections, especially for guys are needed, the way it used to be. I think guys certainly have a lot of diversity and different skills to offer, just look at mens artistic gymnastics to see what I am talking about. Anything can and will happen for this unique Australian sport. The future is bright indeed! See you at Calisthenics!!!!
